Distillation and rectification involve heat, hot liquids, flammable vapors and electricity. An assembly mistake, a cooling failure or a blocked vapor line can lead to burns, fire and destruction of the apparatus. Automation helps detect some faults, but it does not replace working equipment or the presence of an operator.
This guide does not replace the instructions from the manufacturers of the apparatus, steam generator, heater and protective equipment. If the equipment is not rated for the chosen raw material or mode, it must not be started.
Prepare the workplace
- Work sober and do not taste the product during the process. If you are tired or feeling unwell, postpone the run.
- Provide ventilation. Do not work in a cramped, unventilated room. The fermentation room needs ventilation too: carbon dioxide can displace oxygen.
- Remove flammable materials and excess stocks of alcohol. Keep the passage and the exit clear, along with access to the power and water shut-offs.
- Keep children and animals away. Explain to the adults nearby where to safely shut the setup down and how to call for help.
- Place a suitable fire extinguisher by the exit so that you don’t have to go through the fire zone to reach it. Check its service date and labeling: suitability for flammable liquids and permission to use it on live electrical equipment.
- Wear closed shoes, safety glasses if there is a risk of splashes, and clothing without loosely hanging parts. Hot parts call for heat-resistant gloves; for cleaning agents, use gloves suitable according to their instructions.
Check the apparatus before heating
- Set the boiler (kettle) up so it is stable and secure a tall column. Hoses and cables must not pull on the apparatus or cross the walkway.
- Check the seals, clamps, connections and mounts. Use materials rated for contact with alcohol and for the working temperature.
- Clean the vapor line and the condenser. Do not allow clogging by foam, particles of raw material or overly dense packing.
- Observe the permitted boiler fill, charge strength and power from the manufacturer’s instructions. Leave the specified headroom for foam. Do not switch on an immersion heating element without a sufficient liquid level.
- Test new or reassembled equipment on water first, following the manufacturer’s instructions. A water run does not replace the mandatory cleaning of contaminants and does not confirm the safety of all later modes.
- Check the cooling, drain, sensors and protective shutdown before working with an alcohol-containing charge. Do not test the protection by deliberately blocking the steam or overheating a running unit.
Do not cut off the connection to the atmosphere
An apparatus designed for atmospheric pressure must keep the connection to the atmosphere provided by its design. Do not close the atmosphere vent tube, do not pinch hoses, do not plug the condenser outlet. Do not build a setup in which a tap or valve can shut off a heated boiler.
The receiving vessel must also not turn the take-off line into a closed system. Do not submerge the outlet tube in liquid unless the design provides for it. Watch how full the vessel is and change it before it overflows.
A safety valve does not replace a free vapor path. Do not modify the valve or change its setpoint yourself. A pressure sensor and a software stop also do not replace mechanical protection.
Cooling and hot equipment
Before heating, make sure the water source, pump and drain are working and the hoses are secured and not kinked. If cooling is switched on automatically, check that it is ready beforehand. During the process, monitor the actual water flow and the operation of the condenser, not just the readings on the screen.
If cooling is lost or the condenser has stopped condensing vapor, stop heating in a safe way. Do not try to compensate for the fault by continuing to run at lower power.
After heating is switched off, the boiler and column stay hot and vapor generation may continue. In a normal stop, keep the necessary cooling according to the apparatus instructions. Do not open the boiler, loosen connections, top up liquid or drain the hot residue until it has cooled safely and there is no pressure. Do not check pressure by unscrewing the lid.
Open flame and gas heating
Do not smoke or use an open flame near alcohol and its vapors. Do not use open-flame heating for rectification. When choosing distillation equipment, prefer the electric heating without an open flame that the manufacturer provides for.
A gas burner adds an extra source of ignition; with incomplete combustion of the gas there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Moving the receiving vessel away from the burner does not remove the risk by itself. Do not modify gas equipment and do not use it contrary to its instructions. An electronic controller for electric heating cannot be considered a safety system for a gas burner.
Electrical safety
Leave the connection of the power section to a qualified electrician. They must check the protective earth, the circuit breaker, the residual-current device (RCD) or RCBO, and that cables and connectors match the load and the conditions of the room.
- Do not connect the body to the working neutral at the socket and do not use water pipes or heating instead of a protective conductor. The cross-section and wiring scheme are chosen according to the applicable requirements, not by the universal rule “twice as thick”.
- An RCD does not replace protective earth and overload protection. Its parameters and testing procedure must match the line design and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Place sockets, plugs, connectors and power electronics outside the zone of spills, steam and splashes. Do not use damaged cables, bare contacts or temporary twist connections.
- Do not touch electrics with wet hands. Switch off the power before servicing; the “Stop heating” button in the app does not provide electrical isolation.
- Provide an accessible, independent switch-off of the power circuit from a safe place. A failure of the relay or power regulator can make a software command ineffective.
Steam generator and cleaning agents
Use the steam generator only within its intended purpose and permitted pressure. Check the water level, dry-run protection and safety devices according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not install fittings that can cut the safety valve off from the protected volume. The valve’s discharge must be directed safely and must not create back pressure.
Do not open a running or hot steam generator. Refill it only in the way its design provides for.
Store cleaning agents in labeled containers, separately from food, alcohol and receiving vessels. Follow the instructions and the substance’s safety data sheet. Do not mix agents, especially chlorine-containing ones with acids. Do not identify an unknown liquid by taste or smell. After cleaning, rinse the equipment according to the agent’s instructions.
What the Samovar monitors
The set of protections depends on the firmware, the mode, the connected sensors and the settings. Before starting, check the assignment of the temperature sensors and the plausibility of their readings. Flow protection requires an installed and enabled sensor; pressure protection requires a working sensor and a set threshold. In the code that was checked, a pressure threshold equal to zero disables this check.
Do not carry the thresholds of one mode over to all the others. A detailed description of the checks is given in the article “Samovar and Safety”.
A feature of the emergency stop: in the Samovar code that was checked, the controller switches off heating and sends a command to close the cooling valve; if there is a controlled cooling pump, it stops that too. This differs from the normal cooling after the process finishes. A hot apparatus does not become safe at once after an emergency command: residual vapor generation may continue.
A software emergency button connected to the controller is not equivalent to an independent hardware break of the power supply. Do not count on the controller detecting every leak or being able to switch off a damaged power element.
The mobile app and the website let you watch the process and receive messages, but they depend on connectivity. The absence of a notification does not prove the absence of an emergency. Do not leave a running setup unattended and do not start heating remotely without an operator nearby checking the setup.
If a fault occurs
An alcohol leak or steam release. Do not approach the jet and do not tighten hot connections. If it is safe, switch off heating from a place outside the leak zone. Do not pull out the plug or switch ordinary electrical appliances in an area where flammable vapors may have accumulated. Do not turn on a household fan there. Get people out; in case of a heavy leak or if you cannot safely stop the process, leave the room and call 112.
Water spilled near electrics. Do not step into the water and do not touch the apparatus. Switch off the power only from a dry, safe place. Do not count on a stool, a table or a rubber sole as a guarantee of protection from current. If there is no safe access, step back and call for help.
Smoke or fire. Warn people, get out and call 112. Do not open windows to ventilate a fire. Use a fire extinguisher only on a small fire, if you know how to use it and have a clear exit behind you. Do not pour water on live electrical equipment and do not try to put out burning alcohol with a stream of water. If the fire threatens to spread, move away immediately.
Unusual pressure, noise, vibration or take-off stopping. Stop heating in a safe way. Do not clear the vapor line and do not open the apparatus under pressure. Restarting is forbidden until the cause is found and the fault is fixed.
After any emergency stop, first remove the cause and check the equipment. Clearing a message or rebooting the controller is not a repair.
Check before every start
- The operator is present, the exit is clear, the fire extinguisher is accessible.
- The apparatus is stable, the connections are sound, the charge matches the instructions.
- The vapor path and the connection to the atmosphere are clear.
- Cooling and drain are ready, the hoses are secured.
- The electrics are dry and in good order, the independent switch-off is accessible.
- The sensors are assigned, the protections are configured and tested in a safe way.
- The receiving vessel is stable, large enough and does not seal the line.
